Notes & Tones V.2- The Album and Wine Set

Notes & Tones is a collaborative wine & album release between DJ Muggs, Egon of Now-Again Records and Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars who all dreamt up this project, unlike any other done before. Here we offer V.2 of the wine and vinyl record, two bottles offered as one to enjoy now and one to enjoy later with a little age (if you can resist). We hope you experience the new wine and record release together, as both are something special to delight your senses. 

The Wine

Produced by Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars in Berkeley from grapes picked in 2022 from organically farmed Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino. The wine is a blend of three grape varieties: 50% Ribolla Galla, 45% Tocai Friulano and 5% Trebbiano. All grapes naturally fermented on its native yeasts and skins in sandstone jarres, then gently pressed to age back into jarres for twelve months. After that year in jarres it was racked to neutral oak barrique where it lived for six months to develop further. The wine was hand bottled by Muggs, Egon and Chris at the start of 2024 and aged for another year in bottle. Only 540 bottles made.

The Record

The second vintage of Notes  & Tones continues where the first album – all based on Sun Ra samples -  left off: Muggs’ deep dive into Gene Perla’s PM Records catalog of jazz’s wide reach, for your sensory exploration beyond the palate. The record was produced by DJ Muggs of Soul Assassins and readied for release by Egon of Now-Again Records, who oversees PM Records historic label and catalog. 150 colored vinyl and 350 black vinyl records made.

TASTING NOTES: Ripe pear, citrus blossom, candied lemon zest

VITICULTURAL AREA: Shell Creek Vineyard is located 20 miles from the town of Paso Robles. It has sandy top soil with calcareous fossilized seashells underneath. The vineyard was planted in 1972 by the Stinton Family (who has owned the property since the late 1800s). Our Chenin Blanc is farmed without the use of pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. The vineyard is in the process of getting organic certification.

Love Red Can

This is a versatile wine perfect for all red wine loving friends. Our Love Red is the everyday, anytime California red wine we make to showcase the old heritage vines that produce amazing fruit. We can a small amount of all Love wines to make them accessible for any outdoor adventure or occasion. This year’s Love Red is more dynamic than in past vintages, with a subtle touch of tannin and pleasant structure to pair with food, while remaining light and fresh.

The grapes were harvested early to highlight the fruit and preserve their natural acidity. The Carignan and Valdiguie were fermented partially destemmed and whole cluster and went partial carbonic maceration in stainless steel tank. All aged in a mix of neutral French oak barrels and stainless steel.

FUN FACT: Love Red keeps many old vines planted in California, having a home every year at Broc in this blend.

Our Love Collection showcases California’s best organically farmed and unsung grape varieties at an affordable price. All Broc Cellar wines are made using spontaneous fermentation, which means only native yeasts and bacteria that exist on the grapes are used to make wine. We don’t add anything – this includes nutrients, yeast, bacteria, enzymes, tannins or other popular fermentation agents. Sulphur is a naturally occurring element in all wine, the amount found can vary. Sulphur is never added during fermentation and aging. We add little to no S02 at bottling, depending on the wine, year and style.

Got Grapes Red Can

THE STORY: The origin story of Got Grapes is rooted in the unexpected and we reserve it for the experiments and pleasant surprises that each harvest throws our way. This release showcases the fresher side of California red grapes, highlighting a brand new blend for us with Grenache, Cab Pfeffer and even some Fox Hill Nero as the base. This wine is a great go-to red that has lighthearted fruit and could be fully chilled if you desired. Our winemaker describes this release as “a wine that’s more about the style and the enjoyment, having fun”. We couldn’t agree more. It's a perfect anytime and anywhere chillable red. 

All varieties fermented and developed in a mix of stainless tank, concrete and neutral French oak barrique. Blended with precision to deliver the best tasting everyday red for you. Chill it down, pop it open and drink up! 

FUN FACT: The Got Grapes character drawn on each label was inspired by a van in SF that had a purple graffiti sprayed cluster of grapes with a mouth that said “Got Grapes?” It was a daily reminder for Chris as he left for the winery each morning - parked out front of his apartment building.

Spritz Pack w/ June Taylor Seasonal Fruit Syrup

Spritz anyone? Perfect for picnics or pre-dinner aperitif. Our Spritz pack includes the Broc 2023 Sparkling Chenin Blanc and a bottle of June Taylor's seasonal fruit syrup. Toss ice into a glass with 1/2 oz syrup. Top with bubbles and stir until integrated. Enjoy on the nearest patio or picnic blanket.

2023 Sparkling Chenin Blanc 

Tasting Notes: Tropical and lemon oil on the nose, grapefruit, kumquat and lemon-peel on the palate.

This year’s sparkling is a scaled-up Pét-Nat. The Chenin Blanc grapes arrived from Shell Creek Vineyard on an August morning. After a few hours on the skins, the grapes were directly pressed into stainless steel tank. We added Chenin Blanc must and transferred the wine into pressurized tanks while still slightly sweet to finish fermentation. Hand-bottled. No disgorging or dosage and light sulphur at bottling.

Notes & Tones V.1 + V.2 - Album Duo

Volume 1: Produced by DJ Muggs, made with samples from Sun Ra. The only name that fit it was that of the landmark book by the great jazz drummer Art Taylor.  Muggs complimented Chris’s wine with music that Egon sourced from the landmark catalog of the cosmic jazz musician Sun Ra, with all samples cleared by his Estate. A Soul Assassins x Now-Again collaboration. 

Volume 2: The second vintage of Notes  & Tones continues where the first album – all based on Sun Ra samples -  left off: Muggs’ deep dive into Gene Perla’s PM Records catalog of jazz’s wide reach, for your sensory exploration beyond the palate. The record was produced by DJ Muggs of Soul Assassins and readied for release by Egon of Now-Again Records, who oversees PM Records historic label and catalog. 150 colored vinyl and 350 black vinyl records made. 

Notes & Tones is a collaborative wine & album release between DJ Muggs, Egon of Now-Again Records and Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars.
